Symposium at Washington University, St. Louis, MO
I'm honored to have been invited to be a presenter at a Symposium at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
mosAIcs & brAIns : the computational aesthetics of mosaic art
Monday, December 8, 2025
The Campus of Washington University, St. Louis, MO
The Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures at Washington University in St. Louis hosted leaders in the field to address the synergy between art, aesthetics, and AI when applied to contemporary mosaic art.
My presentation was based on my extensive experience of over 2 decades of studio practice and teaching as well as my passion for the the millennia-old history of this medium:
Contemporary Mosaics and the Artistic Process: Does AI Have a Place?
Opening Speaker: Sue Giannotti
With the goal to advance Contemporary Mosaics as an art form, where should the intersections of Art, Education, Process, Aesthetics and AI be? Beginning with a brief primer on the history of the mosaics and the role of mosaicist, my presentation examined some of the current challenges of the medium; underscored the importance of education, artistic practice, and process; and challenged those who might wish to circumvent the process of learning, understanding and creating art.

A common surprise for many visitors to my studio is that I use the ancient method of cutting the stone and mosaic glass.
Each tessera (piece) is cut one at a time and then set into place-- I do not buy them precut. See the video for a quick peek. |

2026 is shaping up to be a busy year!
First news to share: the installation at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Journeys: Inward and Outward Main Terminal, upstairs in the ticketing area. The three covered cases show the steps of the mosaic-making process, a classical mosaic reproduction (fragment), a contemporary piece and several sculptures. Grateful to have this opportunity to share the history and evolution of mosaics with the public-- plus the light in this space is amazing! On view February - July 2026. My thanks to FlySTL, Via Partnership and the team at Lambert for a fantastic installation. |
